Eyelid Surgery vs. Brow Lift: Which Is Right for You?
Drooping eyelids and deep creases between the brows can leave the face looking older and more tired than you feel. Facial plastic surgery can help transform your appearance, smoothing deep lines and lifting drooping skin. Two of the most popular treatments for the eye area include eyelid surgery and brow lift surgery. Dr. Peter Brownrigg explains the difference between eyelid surgery versus brow lift surgery during patient consultations at his Ottawa, ON practice. To find out which treatment is right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Brownrigg today.
What Is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure used to remove excess skin and fatty tissues from the eyelids. Eyelid surgery may be used to address drooping upper eyelids, puffy lower lids, or both. Eyelid surgery is performed through small incisions that are made within the natural creases of the upper eyelids or lower lids. These incisions are used to remove excess skin from the eyelids and to tighten the underlying muscles. Small sutures are then used to close the incisions and complete surgery.
What Is Brow Lift Surgery?
The brow lift is a plastic surgery procedure performed to lift the brows and reduce the appearance of creases and lines on the forehead. During brow lift surgery, small incisions are made along the hair line and temples. Through these incisions, the tissues and muscles of the forehead are tightened and excess tissues removed, creating a smooth brow line. As with eyelid surgery, small sutures are used to close the incisions and complete treatment.
Candidates for Eyelid Surgery
Candidates for eyelid surgery include men and women who are unhappy with the appearance of sagging, drooping eyelids. Those who experience obstructed vision due to drooping eyelids are good candidates for eyelid surgery. In addition to vision obstruction and a general dissatisfaction with the appearance of sagging eyelids, ideal candidates should be in good general health and free of certain eye conditions, like glaucoma, detached retinas, or chronic eye dryness. Those with medical conditions as uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure may not be good candidates for eyelid surgery.
Candidates for Brow Lift Surgery
Men and women may benefit from brow lift surgery. Those who wish to reduce the appearance of creases across the forehead, frown lines between the eyes, and drooping brows may benefit form brow lift surgery. Ideal candidates should be in good general health and, as with eyelid surgery, should be free of certain medical conditions including high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
Those who wish to improve the appearance of sagging eyelids often benefit from eyelid surgery, while those who wish only to smooth lines and creases within the brow benefit from brow lift surgery. Both procedures can be combined to provide complete rejuvenation of the brows and eyelids.
