Bridge Rhinoplasty Enhances the Appearance of the Nose By Nimit D on March 15, 2017

Straight, attractive noseImperfections on the bridge of the nose, such as a crooked bridge, nasal bump, or indentation on the bridge of the nose can make patients feel self-conscious. These individuals know that even minor flaws can affect their appearance, proportions, and symmetry of the face.

Fortunately, plastic surgeon Peter Brownrigg can address nasal imperfections with rhinoplasty surgery. Rhinoplasty improves the size and shape of the nose. Dr. Brownrigg performs bridge rhinoplasty at our Ottawa, ON practice to focus specifically on bumps, indentations, and asymmetry of the bridge.

As with any cosmetic procedure performed at our plastic surgery practice, safety is the top priority when determining candidacy for a bridge rhinoplasty. This procedure is only suitable for patients who are in good overall health and are free of any conditions that may increase the risk of surgery.

Age also plays a factor in candidacy for a bridge rhinoplasty. It is best to hold off on any cosmetic treatment until the nose has reached its full adult size. This typically happens around age 15 or 16 for females and around the age of 16 or 17 for males.

Finally, the patient must have realistic expectations for the results of rhinoplasty. The small changes made during a rhinoplasty procedure can greatly enhance a person’s natural beauty, but they are not meant to completely alter a person’s appearance.

If all of these criteria are met, a bridge rhinoplasty may be suitable for any patient with the following aesthetic concerns:

  • A hump along the bridge of the nose
  • A depression on the bridge of the nose
  • A bridge that is too wide or narrow
  • A crooked nasal bridge

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthetic. There are two techniques that may be used to access the nasal bridge: the open technique and the closed technique. The closed technique involves incisions that are placed within the nose, while the open technique uses an incision that goes across the bottom of the columella, which is the small flap of skin that separates the nostrils. These incisions allows Dr. Brownrigg to lift the skin of the nose so that necessary adjustments can be made to the nasal bridge.

The exact alterations that are made during bridge rhinoplasty will be completely dependent on the unique needs of each patient. In the case of an indented bridge, Dr. Brownrigg will use a graft to smooth out the nose and improve contours. If the bridge is too wide or there is a bump along the nose, tissue will be removed to achieve the desired appearance. Once Dr. Brownrigg is satisfied with the results, the nasal skin will be placed back over the bridge and the incisions will be closed. Within a couple of weeks of treatment, patients will begin to enjoy the results of their newly refined nose.
