Eliminate Under Eye Circles with Lower Eyelid Surgery By Nimit D on March 15, 2016

Woman with beginning signs of aging around the eyesSigns of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin can really take a toll on a person’s appearance. But it is not just that these imperfections can make a person look aged. Some can give an individual the appearance of being constantly tired, worn down, or just plain grouchy. This is often the case with under eye circles. These puffy bags of loose skin that collect beneath the eyes can make a person look unrested and unfriendly. Plastic surgeon Peter Brownrigg offers lower eyelid surgery to smooth out the skin around the eyes. Lower eyelid surgery for under eye circles helps our Ottawa, ON patients eliminate these imperfections and restore a refreshed and youthful appearance.

Candidates for Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery, which is medically known as blepharoplasty, is a treatment designed to improve the appearance of the skin around the lower eyelids. As a person ages and the skin becomes affected by environmental influences, it is common for the skin directly beneath the eye to become loose. It is also normal for fat deposits to begin to collect in these pockets of loose skin. The result is the appearance of puffy “bags” of skin beneath the eyes. These bags often appear darker than the other skin on the face, leaving patients with under eye circles. Patients whose appearance has been affected by under eye circles, and those who are in good overall health, are likely ideal candidates for lower eyelid surgery.

The Procedure

The skin directly around the eyes is very delicate, so to ensure optimal results, it is important to work with a surgeon such as Dr. Brownrigg who is highly skilled and experienced in working with these delicate tissues. With the proper technique, lower eyelid surgery should be a safe and effective cosmetic procedure.

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient treatment that will likely be performed with the patient under the effects of local anesthesia. During treatment, Dr. Brownrigg will make a small incision either just below the lash line, or just inside the lower eyelid. Through the incision that is made, Dr. Brownrigg can remove excess skin and fat in order to smooth out the skin directly underneath the eye. Dr. Brownrigg is careful not to remove too much fat, so as not to give the eyes a hollowed out appearance. In addition to removing fat and skin, Dr. Brownrigg can also reposition these tissues in order to eliminate signs of bags and under eye circles, and give the eyes a more youthful appearance.

Recovery

Lower eyelid surgery results in a fairly short recovery period. While it is normal for the eyes to appear swollen and for some bruising to develop, these side effects often begin to dissipate within the first few days following surgery. Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities within a week after treatment. To be safe, Dr. Brownrigg will ask patients to refrain from more strenuous activities (such as exercise) for at least two weeks following surgery.
