Septoplasty with Rhinoplasty: Can I Do Both?
The bone and cartilage that divides the two sides of the nose is called the septum. When the septum is crooked, or deviated, it can make it more difficult to breathe. A deviated septum can also lead to drainage problems, which increases the risk of sinus infections.
Individuals with a deviated septum are often referred to an otolaryngologist to consider treatment options, which may include a septoplasty. Dr. Peter Brownrigg, who serves the Ottawa, ON, area, is certified as both an otolaryngologist and a plastic surgeon. As such he is often asked, “can I get a septoplasty with a rhinoplasty?” Here he provides an overview of these two procedures and discusses whether it is possible to do both at once.
What Is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct a deviated septum. During a septoplasty the nasal septum is repositioned so that it sits more evenly in the center of the nose. This opens up both nostrils so that a person can breathe easier, and so that mucus can drain properly. During a septoplasty parts of the septum may need to be cut and/or removed to achieve the ideal position.
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Whereas a septoplasty is performed to address structural issues, a rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure. Rhinoplasty is performed to correct aesthetic flaws or blemishes that compromise the appearance of the nose. A rhinoplasty is personalized to each of our Ottawa patient’s specific needs and desires, so each procedure is unique. A rhinoplasty may be performed to:
- Improve the size and/or shape of the nose
- Eliminate a nasal hump or depression
- Correct asymmetry between the nostrils
- Correct a bulbous tip
- Improve overall facial symmetry
Can a Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty Be Combined?
It is not uncommon for a deviated septum to give the nose a crooked or uneven appearance, so it is normal for patients to question whether a septoplasty can be performed alongside a rhinoplasty. Although a septoplasty and rhinoplasty are performed for different reasons, they focus on the same area of the face and involve many of the same alterations. Because of this, it is possible, and actually pretty common, to perform a septoplasty and rhinoplasty at the same time. When the two procedures are combined it is sometimes referred to as a septorhinoplasty.
Benefits of Undergoing Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty at the Same Time
Not only is it possible to get a septoplasty and rhinoplasty at the same time, but it can be highly beneficial to our Ottawa patients. If an individual has breathing issues and cosmetic concerns it is often best to address both issues at once. Combining the two procedures offers a number of advantages, such as:
- Cost benefit of undergoing one surgical procedure as opposed to two
- Convenience
- Lower risk of surgical complications
- Need for one surgical recovery instead of two
- Enhanced aesthetics and nasal functions
