Reduction Rhinoplasty for Improving the Length of the Nose

There are different types of rhinoplasty to address the unique needs of each patient. When it comes to decreasing the length of the nose, reduction rhinoplasty is the most commonly used procedure.

With reduction rhinoplasty, the nose is reshaped to improve its proportions to the rest of the facial features through the removal of small amounts of bone or cartilage. This makes it possible to decrease the length of the nose as well as address bumps on the bridge of the nose. Reduction rhinoplasty may also be used to reduce the appearance of flared nostrils through the removal of tissue at the point where the nostrils meet the cheeks.

Rhinoplasty, including reduction rhinoplasty, may be performed using an open approach or a closed approach. With closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nose. This prevents any external scarring. With open rhinoplasty, the skin at the tip of the nose is lifted by making an incision across the columella, or the area between the two nostrils. By lifting the skin, the surgeon is allowed greater access to reshape the bone and cartilage. Although open rhinoplasty leaves a scar on the outside of the columella, the scar is often very minor and hardly noticeable.

Candidates for rhinoplasty include those who are unhappy with the shape of the nose, whether it's too long, wide, bumpy, or crooked. Through rhinoplasty, it is possible to improve the proportions of the nose for an overall enhanced appearance. In addition to wishing to address aesthetic issues with the nose, ideal candidates for rhinoplasty should be in good general health and free of any serious medical conditions, such has heart disease or uncontrolled diabetes. Candidates should also be non-smokers and have realistic expectations regarding the results of rhinoplasty.
