What Is the Best Age for Facial Plastic Surgery? By Nimit D on September 11, 2017

A woman with fine lines pulling her skin tautDr. Peter Brownrigg offers a wide variety of facial plastic surgery procedures to reverse the signs of aging and balance the features. Although most think of facial plastic surgery as a means to rejuvenate the appearance, it can also benefit those who have not experienced any noticeable signs of aging but wish to enhance the symmetry or definition of certain aspects of the face.

Because of this, different facial plastic surgery procedure may be performed at different ages. Find out more as we take a closer look at age and facial plastic surgery in this brief overview from our Ottawa, ON cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery practice.

Facelift

The facelift procedure is one of the most effective ways to reverse the signs of aging. There are different types of facelifts designed to address specific areas of the face, such as a mid facelift to target areas below the eyes and around the cheeks, or a lower facelift to target the jowls and smooth lines around the mouth.

Generally, ideal candidates for facelift surgery are between the ages of 40 and 70. Additionally, candidates should have visible signs of aging on the face and neck, as well as good skin elasticity and good general health.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedure used to alter the appearance of the nose, helping to balance the face and create a more attractive appearance. A nose job may be used to straighten the nose, correct the nose after injury, open up breathing passages, or otherwise enhance the appearance of the nose.

Candidates for rhinoplasty can vary in age and may include those who are still in their teens. However, teens that are interested in undergoing a nose job must not undergo the procedure until their nose has reached its adult size. For teen girls, this typically occurs by the age of 16 and for boys the age of 17. Because it may be difficult to know when the nose has reached its adult size, it is often recommended that teens to wait until the age of 18 to undergo rhinoplasty.

Facial Implants

Facial implants may be placed within the cheeks or chin to help balance the face and define the features. Facial implants are often beneficial for men and women who are unhappy with the appearance of a receding chin or shallow cheekbones. Candidates should be over the age of 18 to ensure that the cheekbones and jaw have finished growing before implants are placed. Adults who are older and have noticed their cheeks becoming hollow from aging may be prime candidates for cheek implants.

Brow Lift

A brow lift is a procedure that can reduce the appearance of deep creases within the forehead and between the eyes, and it can lift drooping brows. Most patients who choose to undergo the brow lift procedure are between the ages of 40 and 50.

For some people, heredity can make the signs of aging begin as early as their 20s or 30s. In such cases, a brow lift may be performed to rejuvenate the appearance. Likewise, those over the age of 50 may also be good candidates for brow lift surgery, provided they have good skin and are in good health.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can address a variety of eyelid issues, including puffy upper eyelids, bags under the eyes, and hooded eyelids that obscure vision. In many cases, eyelid issues corrected by blepharoplasty are linked to the aging process.

Accordingly, most candidates are over the age of 35. Eyelid surgery may be performed on younger patients over the age of 18 with a hereditary drooping of the eyelids. For some, this drooping may be severe enough to obscure vision. Eyelid surgery can help.
