Rhinoplasty for a Wide Nose
Rhinoplasty can help provide balance to the facial features, helping those who are unsatisfied with the appearance of their nose find a new sense of confidence. One way in which rhinoplasty can enhance facial proportions is by narrowing a wide nose. Dr. Peter Brownrigg’s experience and expertise allows him to improve the appearance of a wide nose while maintaining the natural beauty and character of each patient's face. To find out if you're a candidate for rhinoplasty for a wide nose, please contact our Ottawa, ON office to schedule a consultation.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
There are different approaches to narrowing the nose through rhinoplasty. The approach used will depend on the unique anatomy of the patient, as well as the desired results. With that in mind, the overall goal of rhinoplasty is to achieve a natural look by making fine adjustments to the nasal structure. When addressing the width of the nose, this is most commonly done through reduction rhinoplasty, or more specifically alar base reduction.
Alar base reduction may be used to reduce the width of the nostrils; it is a common technique for ethnic rhinoplasty. During alar base reduction surgery, a small wedge of tissue is cut and removed from the nostrils at the point where they meet the cheeks. The nostrils are then sutured in place so that residual scars are hidden within the crease where the nostrils meet the cheeks.
Alar base reduction is a relatively quick procedure, generally taking about an hour, but may be paired with other rhinoplasty methods to completely transform the appearance of the nose.
Recovery after Rhinoplasty
Recovery after rhinoplasty will vary by patient depending on the extent of surgery along with personal healing times. With that said, a full recovery may take several weeks and care should be taken to prevent complications and ensure the best results.
During the first few days of recovery, patients may experience some swelling and discomfort. Keeping the head elevated and gently applying cold compresses to the nose and mid-face can help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort.
Patients should avoid strenuous exercise and activities until approved by their surgeon but are generally well enough to return to work within a week or two of surgery.
Although patients should be fully recovered within several weeks of surgery, it may take a full year to see final results of rhinoplasty depending on the extent of surgery. In many cases, patients will see a noticeable improvement once swelling and bruising subsides, about two to three weeks after surgery.
Candidates for Rhinoplasty
Many people who are unhappy with the width, size, or overall appearance of their nose may benefit from rhinoplasty. Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty should be in good general health and free of such health issues as uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, as these can lead to complications during or after surgery. Candidates should be non-smokers, or committed to avoid smoking prior to surgery and during recovery. Candidates should also have realistic expectations about the outcome of rhinoplasty.
