Reshape the Nose and Enhance Your Natural Beauty
Many people are dissatisfied with appearance of their nose. Even the smallest imperfections, such as a bump on the ridge of the nose, uneven nostrils, or a crooked ridge, can greatly throw off the appearance of the nose. Similarly, a nose that is too large, too wide, or too thin can throw off the proportions of the face. All of these problems can be addressed through plastic surgery. A rhinoplasty improves the shape and size of the nose to enhance the natural beauty of the face rather than detract from it. In addition to improving the shape of the nose, Dr. Peter Brownrigg can also eliminate other imperfections. For instance, in many cases, Dr. Brownrigg performs nostril reduction on his Ottawa, ON patients.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is truly one of the most customized plastic surgery procedures, so each case will be unique. Surgery will begin with the administration of anesthesia to ensure that the patient remains comfortable throughout treatment. Depending on each case, Dr. Brownrigg may use general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
Once a patient has been adequately sedated, the surgical incision will be made. There are two commonly used techniques for rhinoplasty: a closed procedure and an open procedure. When the closed technique is used, the incision will be hidden inside the nose. An open procedure involves an incision that goes across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue that separates the two nostrils). Once an incision is made, the skin is carefully lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage. With this structure exposed, Dr. Brownrigg can make any necessary changes to the nose, including removing bone or cartilage, adding a bone graft, or correcting a deviated septum.
Nostril Reduction
When necessary, nostril reduction can be performed during a rhinoplasty procedure, or, in some cases, on its own. Nostril reduction reduces the size of the nostrils for patients who have overly large nostrils that give the nose a wide or flared appearance. It is important to keep proportions in mind when performing nostril reduction. If the nostrils are narrowed too much, it can give the nose an unbalanced and unnatural appearance. Dr. Brownrigg plans nostril reduction very carefully to ensure that patients will achieve the results they desire, while maintaining the natural proportion of the nose and face.
To reduce the size of the nostrils, Dr. Brownrigg can either use a small incision inside the nose at the base of the nostrils, or a small incision in the outer corner of each nostril (where the nose meets the cheeks). Whichever incision is used, a small wedge of skin will be removed and a suture will be made to pull in the nostrils, thus reducing their size and width. This procedure can also be performed to even out two nostrils that are uneven in size, to give the nose a more symmetrical appearance.
